NIMAS was originally founded in 1951 as the Natal Industries Medical Aid Society. NIMAS then provided medical aid for the members of the Natal Chamber of Industries.
In 1977 the company changed its name to NIMED which lasted until 1993 when the name changed back to the original acronym but with a different emphasis, NIMAS - National Independent Medical Aid Scheme. NIMAS disassociated from the Natal Chamber of Industries and became a registered Medical Scheme. NIMAS outsources its administration to Metropolitan Health Group.
What is on offer at NIMAS?
NIMAS offer a number of different options with the lowest premium plan called the Primary Plan. Primary offers a basic health care plan through the Prime Cure Network and NIMAS claim that this covers a well-balanced core of medical requirements as well as appropriate day-to-day benefits.
The NIMAS Medical Aid levels of cover progress up to the Supreme Plan, which NIMAS say offers comprehensive health care cover including maximum cover on all medical expenses and day-to-day benefits. Supreme does not offer a savings plan.
